John Javes UI/UX
Advanced JavaScript, CSS, and HTML5 UI development. User-Centered Design and Leadership.
Expert Web Usability Engineering proven with one "Mosaic", two "Webby", and two "PROSE" Awards.
2015 Usability Testing and Prototyping
- I am committed to developing Web experiences which provide a deep level of usability.
- I commonly use techniques such as cognitive walkthrus, task analyses, and click-trail analysis to gain insights from user experiences.
- I choose to use technologies to replace customization (User-invoked) with personalization (machine learning)
- I use Responsive Design, Web Standards, ADA 508c and HTML5 MVC coding techniques.
- I develop Rapid Prototypes using HTML5, and combinations of ASP, cookies, and JavaScript to simulate a detailed, responsive user experience.
- The figure below describes how Rapid Prototyping can support Usability discovery and testing.
2015 Caesars Entertainment - Mobile Development
- I built a member web application using BackboneJS, HandlebarsJS, and UnderscoreJS.
- I expanded the existing website for TR members to respond to mobile devices.
2014 Caesars Entertainment - Website Development
- These show two applications which use BackboneJS, HandlebarsJS, and UnderscoreJS extensively.
2014 Caesars Entertainment - Admin Tool Development
- I designed the interface and implemented using Bootstrap3 and .Net 4.0 MVC development with Razor CSHTML with C# in Views and Controllers.
2012 CEI wireframes
- As a first step, I wireframed the applications in Adobe Illustrator.
- I then created .Net 3.0 MVC pages with Razor, using extensive Javascript for simulation. This image shows a walkthru menu on the left.
2012 STAR METRICS Reports
- I designed the STAR METRICS annual report with inDesign.
- I re-engineered Excel report automation.
2011 Prudential Annuities
- I researched, prototyped and tested an in-house application:
- I used Powerpoint often to convey concepts and findings to stakeholders.
2011 Health Sciences International Bookstores
- I managed the UI redesign and migration of all worldwide bookstores.
2010 NIH TNFα Timeline
- I designed and coded this interactive timeline for Dr Collins' use.
2010 STAR METRICS
- I designed and coded many website versions in response to this White House initiative. Visit http://starmetrics.nih.gov/
2010 Article of the Future v2
- After the success of version 1, I improved the design and made design changes. This design won two PROSE awards.
2009 Article of the Future v1
- Early prototypes of this initiative were critiqued in a New York Times article
- The progress of the prototypes were validated thru Scientist interviews and questionnaires.
- Task analyses showed that researchers needed a better way to view articles
and high-resolution figures interactively and simultaneously. This
prototype solved the problem by using Javascript and JQuery techniques
to present scaleable figures alongside the scrolling article.
2009 PJM Interconnection
- PJM manages the electrical grid for the US East Coast. I helped a design a new application for the Control Room.
- I conducted interviews with engineers and dispatchers, focusing on Contextual Inquiry, Cognitive Walkthrus, and Task Analyses.
- Extensive UI prototypes using XML-driven WPF and XAML templates, limited C#, Microsoft Expression Blend, and Infragistics WPF graphing library. Custom Icon creation.
2008 - 2009 Comcast
- The Comcast Video page is representative of the dozens of pages I constructed using JSP, JSON Javascript, JQuery, Prototype and CSS
- This image is a snapshot of the upcoming rTivo AJAX/SOA application, which was integrated into the Comcast TVGrid. The development releases were subject to rigorous heuristics and usability tests internally.
2008 Department of Homeland Security, Transportation Security Administration
- I conducted extensive interviews with Government and industry stakeholders, researchers, program managers
- One result of user research was to offer sorting on 4 taxonomic dimensions for each search as seen in below in blue.
- Other results were to offer a Project Portfolio Management and Community features
- I became involved with US Government Semantic Web efforts using Ontology technologies such as RDF/OWL
2006 Blue Cross - Claims Management designed to be used with IE6
- Used with Internet Explorer 6, IQPlus is a major application design which resulted from superior Usability techniques and design.
- Persona discovery and analysis resulted in a role-based login for 5 user workflows.
- Task analyses resulted in a restricted browser size which took up only one-quarter of the screen, and a mouse-free input layout for most users
- The application uses many original CSS and DOM JS tricks such as AJAX, a unique focus hiliter and original icons. In particular, the Routing History shows a unique table scroller which maintains headers on both x and y axes.

2006 - 2007 Blue Cross - Other Projects
2004 Federal Communications Commission
- Review all wireframes and flowcharts here
- Click the War Room Viewer
to see comp screenshots from the application which hangs in the FCC
Auction Rooms. I designed the application from scratch, with input from mathemeticians, auctioneers, attorneys, Auctions Bureau management. I conducted Contextual Inquiry and Card Sorting to determine which data clusters to be shown at each interval. This application is currently in use for all auctions in Washington and Gettysburg. I coded the Actionscript
to receive and format XML pushed from a server.
- This Auctions Form page
is just one ‘clickable’ flows which leads to 508c pages for which I
conducted the IA, UX, and coding. I conducted end-user testing to validate these designs.
- Auctions Administration Console
shows advanced uses of CSS and Javascript for the FCC
1996-1999 Intelihealth
- InteliHealth won two Webby awards, which had much to do with the usability of the site. I used a wide range of techniques to plan and adjust the site. Sitemaps, Wirframes, card sorts, user interviews wrere often used.
- I implemented a clicktracking system which allowed us to determine how traffic would change with changes to the navigation.
- I was involved with efforts toward improving find-ability, utilizing NIH PubMed, UMLS, Autonomy, lexical technologies, ontologies and taxonomies.
Previous Experience
- I began my career as an Art Director in the Direct Mail industry, which used scientic methods to maximize returns.
- These techniques included eye-tracking and A/B split tests.
